The Quiet Signals We Often Ignore
Have you ever said yes to something while feeling your stomach tighten? Or agreed to help someone even though every part of you wanted to rest? Most of us were raised to prioritise politeness, productivity, or approval over intuition, so we override the signals our body sends us.
But the body always speaks first. Long before the mind rationalises or explains, the body whispers - no. Sometimes it’s a heaviness in the chest, a tension in the shoulders, a sudden fatigue. Other times, it’s a subtle unease that we can’t quite name.
These aren’t inconveniences. They’re information. They’re the body’s way of saying, “This doesn’t feel aligned.”
The Body as an Inner Compass
In holistic counselling, we understand that the body is the subconscious in motion. It stores memory, emotion, and intuition, even when the mind isn’t ready to acknowledge them.
When we ignore our body’s no, we create internal conflict. The nervous system moves into subtle stress response, fight, flight, or freeze, while the conscious mind continues on autopilot. Over time, this disconnection can manifest as burnout, anxiety, or chronic tension.
Listening to your body isn’t about perfection; it’s about partnership. It’s learning to trust the signals of expansion and contraction. For practitioners, this awareness becomes a core skill, modelling embodied boundaries for clients and teaching others to honour their own energetic limits.
A Two-Minute Embodiment Check-In
Here’s a quick exercise you can use throughout your day:
1. Pause before saying yes:
Whenever you’re asked to do something — even small — take a single deep breath before responding.
2. Scan your body:
Notice your stomach, jaw, and chest. Do you feel light and open, or tense and restricted?
3. Name the sensation:
Say to yourself: “This feels like a yes” or “This feels like a no.”
4. Honour what you feel:
You don’t have to explain it or justify it. Simply notice and act in alignment with your body’s message where possible.
The more often you check in, the clearer your inner language becomes. The body’s “no” is never unkind — it’s simply information about what supports your wellbeing.
